Develop an attacker’s ability to take on a defender in a creative way, with turns added to the mix.
This practice incorporates turning, allowing players to consider how to beat a defender creatively.
Mark out a square area with two sets of gates, positioned as shown in the illustration. The defender and attacker start in opposite corners of the area. The defender begins with the ball.
The defender passes to the attacker and then tries to win the ball back. On receiving the ball, the attacker looks to dribble through either of the two gates. If the defender wins the ball, they look to exit through either of the gates.
Can you reach a gate without the need to dribble past the defender? A controlled first touch towards a gate will help with this.
If this is not possible, use feints and disguise to beat the defender.
Try to change direction while the defender is moving, exploiting the fact their body weight will be off centre.
