Sharpen up your players’ technical skills and reactions to transitions in this three-part session.
A fun warm-up, the rondo is a great way to get the players involved with a ball straight away, working on key passing technical details.
Set up two 12x12 boxes, with two mini goals on each end of both. Four players are on the outside, with two defending players in the middle of each box. Coaches can adjust the box size or the number of players, depending on ability and availability.
Players must work together to successfully make six passes. If one team achieves this, they shout “Switch!” – the defending team in each box switches boxes as quickly as possible. This is to get them reacting to transitions. If the defenders win the ball, they can break out of the rondo and score in either of the mini goals. However, the four players on the outside of the rondo must react – can they win the ball back? That’s the transition.
