A session which focuses on the basics of 1v1 defending – protecting space, closing down and tackling. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This second practice provides more relevance to players’ defending, through the introduction of direction and giving them something to protect.
Split players into two groups who work in separately marked out channels. Both are also split in half, with a 1v1 in each half. At one end of the pitch is a goal and goalkeeper, at the other end is a small goal and a server/servers.
The server plays the ball to the attacking player in the first half of the area, who then looks to transfer it to their team-mate in the other half of the pitch. If successful, the attacking player in the second half looks to score a goal. If the defenders win the ball at any time, they aim to play it into the small goal.
Progression: Allow the server to play directly into the second half and/or allow the attackers to rotate between the two halves.
Again, defenders should remain close/tight to their opponent and be positive and determined in their defending. If they are close to the attacker, the defender should use small steps and wait for the right opportunity to win the ball.
