A session which focuses on the basics of 1v1 defending – protecting space, closing down and tackling. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
The session now moves into a game, while still allowing the players to focus on their one-on-one defending.
Again, split players into two teams and partner them up with a player from the opposition. Choose one pair to act as goalkeepers. The area is split into sections - the number of sections should be equal to the number of pairs (less the goalkeepers). Each pair is then allocated and locked into a section of the area.
The game is played as normal, except the players are not allowed to leave their allocated section of the area. Therefore, the ball can only be transferred to another area of the pitch through a pass. Rotate the sections to provide players with a different experience.
Players should continue to focus on staying close/tight to their partner. They should continue to be positive and determined in their defending, and if they are close enough to the attacker then they should use small steps and wait for the right opportunity to win the ball.
