A three-part session which focuses on the basics of 1v1 defending – protecting space, closing down and tackling. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
It is vital that players know how to efficiently and effectively close down opponents and, once they have done this, to win the ball.
Create an area suitable for your players, with a smaller area in each of the four corners. Split players into two teams and then put one from each team into pairs. Two of the pairs are split across the four small areas (see illustration). Each remaining pair has a ball.
The player with the ball looks to keep it away from their partner for as long as possible. If the other player wins the ball, they try to pass it to a team-mate who is located within one of the small areas. Upon doing so, the player in the small area enters the main area with the ball and is replaced by the team-mate who passed it to them.
Players need to remain close/tight to their partner. They should also be positive and determined in their defending. When close to the attacker, the defender should use small steps and focus on the ball while waiting for the right opportunity to win the ball.
