A good first touch is important for control of the ball - this session will help your players improve theirs. Use this warm up as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
A good and effective first touch is important so players can get the ball under control quickly, allowing them to make use of any space they have created. This simple warm-up gives them a feel of the ball.
Players are split into pairs and positioned directly opposite each other. A coned gate is situated just in front of each player. Use one ball between each pair of players.
The two players pass the ball between themselves. On receiving the ball the player takes a touch to one side of their gate, before passing the ball back to their partner. The practice works continuously in this manner and can be progressed by changing which side of the gate the players take their touch and also by which part of their foot they use to do it.
Players should be ready to react to the pass and adjust their position if needed. Their first touch should be to the side and slightly in front of them so that their next touch is the pass to their partner.
