Encourages players to make improved, informed decisions about when and where to play the ball.
Split area into thirds. Three areas will be wider than they are long. Top and bottom thirds have a goal at the end.
Two teams play against each other in each third. For the teams with a goal as a target, the objective is to score. The target for the other teams is to progress the ball into the next third. Ball starts in a defensive third with defending team, who must play into the midfield third. They then play into the attacking third. If the other team wins the ball, they do the same the other way. When ball has left the defensive third, the defenders are given another. Only one ball is allowed in each area.
Look up and around before receiving, trying to identify: Where are the opposition? When and where can you safely receive the ball? Where are your teammates? What support might you have when you receive the ball? What opportunities are there to move the ball into the next third? Is there a ball in the next third? Is it okay to look to play or should we hold it in our third? How can we support the player on the ball? Don’t force it - go backwards to go forwards if necessary. Shape - how can we offer width and depth?
