Encourages use of space, identifying chances to win a point and think a step ahead.
Split area into thirds - the segments will be wider than they are long. Create three gates on each of the end lines - one in the middle and one either side, halfway between the middle goal and the sidelines.
Split players into teams of even size. Two teams play against each other in each area - use as many areas as you need. Players win a point by working together to either slot the ball, or dribble, through gates. Once a point has been won, the conceding team restarts from their back line. If the ball goes off the pitch, play restarts with either a throw-in or kick-in.
Progressions: On one of the end lines, rather than having three gates, consider a goal with a goalkeeper. Create imbalances in the team sizes to create different challenges.
Look up and around before receiving, trying to identify: Where are the opposition? When and where can you safely receive the ball? Where are your teammates? What support might you have when you receive the ball? Which gate might it be best to target? Don’t force it - if one gate isn’t an option, how can we work it to another?
