This three-part practice develops players’ understanding of when and how to exploit a numerical advantage (overload) against the opposition.
Set up a playing area relevant to the age and ability of your players. Divide it into quarters. Teams play 9v9. Attacking team: GK-1-5-2; defending team: GK-3-4-1.
Normal game rules apply. If a goal is scored, play restarts with the opposite goalkeeper. Goals are worth three points if two or more players combine inside an attacking quadrant (e.g. overlap, underlap, one-two, give and go, third-man run).
Challenges
0-7 mins: Defence is tasked with defending in a low-block after possession is lost
7-14 mins: Defence is tasked with counter-pressing after possession is lost
0-14 mins: Coach the attacking team to find solutions; highlight cues/triggers to overload, encourage runs in front of, inside and around the ball carrier.
