Develop players’ understanding of when and how to make the most of a numerical advantage.
This three-part practice develops players’ understanding of when and how to exploit a numerical advantage (overload) against the opposition.
Set up a playing area relevant to the age and ability of your players. Divide it into quarters, with a big goal and three mini goals. Set up the attacking team in a 5-2 formation and the defending team GK-3-4 (2v3+GK in one half, 5v4 in the other).
Play always restarts with the attacking team on halfway. One attacking player can drop in to overload the defensive half, creating a 6v4. Two attacking players from the defensive half can support in the attacking half, creating a 4v3. Defending players are restricted to their halves until possession is won. When defenders win possession, they have 10 seconds to score in the mini goals. To play forward, players must pass over the halfway line. Goals are worth three points if the ball crosses the mid-line in the attacking half.
