This small-sided game supports the development of goalscoring opportunities from wide areas. Focus on effective crossing and finishing, decision-making, timing of runs, verbal and non-verbal communication, speed of run and cross.
Set up a pitch relative to the age and ability of your players, with two full-size goals. Divide players into two teams of eight, including goalkeepers.
The practice starts with the Blues’ goalkeeper. The Blues try to combine to get the ball out to either Blue wide player, who can then cross (two touch maximum) and then players try to score.
The practice restarts a Red goal-kick, with them trying to achieve the same at the opposite end.
Coaches should encourage players to focus on the quality of pass, including selection, weight and accuracy. Coaches should also look at players’ movement to receive, receiving on the back foot to play forward, supporting angles/distances to the player on the ball, crossing with varied techniques and finishing quality.
1. Set up with 5v5 outfield players, two goalkeepers and two players from each team out wide
2. Both teams look to attack the opposition’s goal, using the wide players for overloads where possible
