Develop your team’s ability and awareness when it comes to changing direction of play.
This three-part practice develops teams’ ability and awareness to switch the play.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place two mini goals on each side and mark out three vertical and three horizontal lanes. Divide players into two teams.
The game is directional. When in possession, teams must occupy all three vertical lanes. When out of possession, teams must not have players in more than two vertical lanes. Rules can be added, such as:
In possession: Quick ball speed to exploit free player in an outside lane; use depth as well as width to stretch opposition; play on different lines to maximise options to switch.
Out of possession: Attempt to prevent switch and keep opposition on one side – use touchline as an extra defender; defend narrow to prevent split passes – leave the furthest player.
