Develop your team’s ability and awareness when it comes to changing direction of play.
This three-part practice develops teams’ ability and awareness to switch the play.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Place two mini goals on each side and mark a vertical halfway line. Divide players into two teams plus two neutral players on the outside.
The game is directional. Neutrals support the team in possession and are limited to a maximum of two touches - this can be reduced to one touch to challenge players further).
In possession: Make pitch big to create opportunity for a switch; central players should be on different lines to create more angles to switch; ball speed must be quick or defenders will be able to shift across; In-possession team should not cut off angles for their teammates to use the forward Neutral player.
Out of possession: Communication; defend narrow – must defend the middle to prevent passes to the Neutral player; attempt to force play in one direction and prevent the switch – angle of approach.
