Develop your players’ ability to turn and execute it effectively. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
A small-sided game where players are given two different ways and directions in which they can score. This gives them more opportunity to develop their understanding of where, when and how to turn.
Set up a square pitch, with goals on all four sides. On two sides are normal goals with goalkeepers, while on the other two sides have two small goals or gates. They are positioned so that a normal goal is directly opposite two small goals. Split players into two teams.
The teams look to defend two small goals and one normal goal, and score in the others. A normal goal and two small goals that are facing each other are paired - so one team looks to score one way across the pitch and their opponent the other. If the ball goes out of play, restart by either passing or dribbling the ball back in. Extra points can be awarded if a team scores in the normal goal.
Same coaching points as in the previous two practices. Players also need to take into consideration the different ways in which they can score (and the scoring system) when making a decision on whether or not they should change direction.
