This session promotes proactive closing down to win possession. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
The players are put into a game environment to practice pressing.
Set up a pitch relevant in size for your players. The pitch is set out as normal, but split into three equal thirds.
Play as a normal match, apart from some slight alterations that promote the focus of the session. If the ball goes out of play, the game always restarts with a goalkeeper. If a team wins possession in the opposition’s defensive third and go on to score a goal, they win three points. If they do so from the central third, they win two points. All other goals are worth one. Progress the practice by moving into a normal game.
Which defender should press the player on the ball? When an opposition player passes to a team-mate, which player should then press? How can all of the other players help stop the opposition from playing forward?
