Don’t wait for an error: this three-part session promotes proactive closing down to win back possession of the ball.
Pressing the ball is a great tactic for winning the ball back. This three-part session demonstrates to players the value in doing so, compared to standing off and waiting for the opposition to make a mistake or trying to intercept a pass.
Set up a number of areas to accommodate all players, and split them into thirds, including a small central channel. At one end, an attacker starts with the ball just outside the area. In the third closest to them is their partner. Two defenders are located within the other end third, protecting two small goals.
The attacker with the ball starts by passing to their partner and then enters the area. Once the pass is made, the defenders become unlocked. The attackers look to score in the two small goals, but, before they do so, they must get out of the third they started in. If the defenders win the ball, they try to dribble over the end line where the attacker entered the area.
• Can the defenders stop the attackers from exiting their third of the area? Can they close down the space quickly and win the ball as far away from their goals as possible?
