Three-part session on a key facet of the modern game – reacting to win back possession.
This practice focuses on the players working together to win back possession quickly. If they do not win the ball back within a small number of passes, it is likely their opponents will have a shot.
Split players into three teams. Two teams play against each other on the field, with the third acting as goalkeepers and servers, who are situated outside the area. The size of the area should encourage players to win the ball back quickly, while also ensuring they have to press correctly – it can’t be too small as they will be able to win the ball without having to work hard.
Teams must complete a set number of passes (three or four) before they can shoot at either goal. When a goal is scored, or the ball goes out of play, a server plays the ball quickly into the other team’s possession. The first team to score a set amount of goals wins and stays on; the losing team swaps with the team acting as the servers and goalkeepers.
