Develop your players’ ability to create goal-scoring opportunities from wide areas.
This session focuses on moving the ball quickly into wide areas and exploiting space in those areas. It is ideal for 16 players and perfect if there is no goalkeeper attending your session.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Divide the area into three channels, with a mini goal and a gate goal at either end of the central channel.
Split players into groups of four. Each group needs three attackers and one defender. Attacking players must spread out across the three channels and must make at least three passes before scoring in the small goal. Players have unlimited touches to start and can interchange zones with or without the ball. If the defender wins possession, they can score on the counter by dribbling between the cones. Variations: Two-touch maximum in the central zone, or players must make at least one interchange before scoring.
Focus should be on quality and type of pass; quality of first touch; combination play; shape: staggering; finishing; transition.
