Improve players’ ability to recognise when to switch play to target the opposite flank.
This session aims to improve players’ ability to recognise when to switch the attack to target the weak side, and how to support the switch.
Set out an area relative to the age and ability of your players, and mark a halfway line. Set up with a 6v3 in favour of the attacking side. All players should start in one half, except one attacker and one defender.
The attacking team aims to maintain possession - after a minimum of six passes they aim to switch to an attacker on the ‘weak side’ (other half). Once play has been switched, players move across to support. It must always remain a 5v2 in one half, so one attacker and one defender must stay behind. The ‘weak side’ defender cannot enter play until the ball has been played into that half. If defenders win possession, they score by dribbling out of the area. To progress, players can dribble across the halfway line, or the defender waiting can become a third defender.
