If teams launch direct passes behind your defence, use this game to help players watch for, and react to, danger.
Supports players to watch for, and react to, the dangers of the long ball.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players, split into four zones. The two middle zones are slightly bigger than the outer ones. Split players into two teams, including goalkeepers. You will need balls, bibs, cones and two goals.
Position players in specific zones - the end zones should have a goalkeeper and an opposition attacker, and the middle zones should have three defenders or midfielders and an opposition midfielder. This set up means a long ball to the lone striker is always an option, giving defenders multiple chances to work out how to deal with it. Players must stay in their zones, but one defender can drop into the end zone on the lone striker’s first touch. Play starts with a pass from the goalkeeper to one of their defenders or midfielders. The game is live on their first touch.
