A good fullback should know how to overlap with a winger to give your team a greater attacking threat. Use this game to help your players understand how to attack together.
Why use it
Overlapping is a very important tactic in the final third of the pitch, where fullbacks can combine with wingers to get into dangerous crossing positions.
Set up
Set up an area of 30x30 yards using cones. We've used nine players in the session. You will also need balls, bibs and two goals.
How to play
Start with a defender and a goalkeeper in each half and two attackers in the centre. The attackers go 2v1 against the first defender using passing and support play, and then turn to receive a second ball for a 2v1 in the opposite direction. Advance the session by bringing on the three other players and make it three attackers and two defenders in each half. Play as before and there should be much more movement and numerous opportunities to overlap.
Technique
Overlapping runs can cause chaos in defences when wingers are supported by fullbacks, opening up one side of the defence for attackers to exploit. The overlap makes it easier for youth players to know where and when to pass the ball because they can see the player's movement.
