Coach the techniques, principles and tactics of defending as a unit to win the ball in wide areas.
Coach your players the techniques, principles and tactics of how to defend collectively and to set traps in wide areas.
Set up a number of playing areas, each with a mini goal in one corner. Start with a 1v1+1 on each pitch, before progressing to a 2v2+1 and then a 3v2+1. You might need to alter the pitch size to suit.
The attacking team’s aim is to score in the mini goal. The defending team’s first aim is to succeed in defending (delay and deny) for a minimum of 5-6 seconds. The recovering defender (blue) can then join the defence. If the defenders win possession, they earn a point by dribbling out of the area.
