Encourage your players to build out from the back with this session. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session
This practice works on players’ ability to build play from the defensive third.
Set up an area relative to the age and ability of your players. Divide the top third of the area with cones or flat markers. Set up one large goal and two mini goals.
The in-possession team starts with a 7v5 advantage. There are two neutral players, one on each touchline. Play always begins with the goalkeeper. The aim for the in-possession team is to play into the end zone and to score in a mini goal. Neutral players cannot pass directly into the end zone. If the out-of-possession team wins the ball, they can score in the big goal. The coned line also acts as a guide for the in-possession central midfielders, to try and receive the ball in the end zone..
Progressions: Allow one in-possession player to enter the end zone to support the play.
• Body shape to receive: scanning and receiving on the ‘half-turn’ - try to play forward
• Movement to receive: sharp to exploit space, attract defenders to enable switch of play, open passing lanes to team-mates
• Weight/type of pass: send a message, i.e. passing to back foot or front foot. Vary pass length and speed to create gaps in defence.
