From distance shots to one-touch finishes - this drill will improve your players’ goalscoring return. Use this session as a standalone activity, or combine it with two progressions to create a full session.
These three practices give players an opportunity to improve their attacking and goalscoring in the final third.
Set up an area relevant to your players. The length, in particular, is crucial, as it will influence the distance players will shoot from. This needs to be realistic to the distance they would shoot from during a game. At each end of the pitch is a goal and goalkeeper. Split players into two groups – they line up at opposite goals.
One player from each group travels with a ball towards the opposite goal. Once they have crossed the halfway line, they have a shot on goal. As soon as the player has had their shot, the next player from their group can enter the area and travel towards goal. After having their shot, the player then joins the other line. After a set period of time, the players line up on the opposite side of the goal.
• Players should look to have the ball under control while travelling with it, using big touches to get it out of their feet. As they enter the second half of the area, they need a smaller touch to set themselves for the shot.
