This session develops players’ awareness and movement to build through defence and midfield.
This practice introduces goalkeepers into positional play and works on transition while developing the ability to support and then play through the field.
Mark out an area with a halfway line (two 30x40 grids). Each end line has a goalkeeper while all other players start in one half. The goalkeeper in that half starts with the ball. Play 6v6 plus a neutral player.
Teams aim to receive the ball from one goalkeeper and transfer the ball to the other goalkeeper on the opposite end line. Start with a condition that says teams must play at least four passes before switching the play, but this can be altered as the session progresses. All players then move to support the play in the opposite half of the pitch.
Encourage quick play and combination play while helping goalkeepers develop the ability to provide an option to receive and play into the outfield players, who are moving to support.
