Here are two drills to improve your team’s passing and shooting skills.
DRILL ONE
Lay-off pass by Tony Carr
When performed with the right weight and timing, a lay-off pass speeds up attacking play and creates opportunities your team can exploit.
What you are looking for players to do
You need to use an area 30 yards square.
How to play it
How to develop it
Players line up centrally and just outside the “D” of the penalty area, with one player located centrally three yards inside the penalty area.
The first player in the line passes to the “lay-off” player, then shoots first-time at goal. After shooting, they turn and become the next player to lay-off the ball before joining the back of the line.
Players laying-off the ball must practise passing both to the left and right and using both feet. This will also make shooters use both feet.
This drill was originally in the Smart Sessions
DRILL TWO
Score and Assist by Michael Beale
This attacking and finishing drill tests the first attacker to finish their chance before spinning away to lay off a pass from his team mate and create a second opportunity.
The attacker needs to react quickly to make the pass and ensure that they follow up the second shot to capitalise on any rebounds off the goalkeeper.
You need to set up an area 40 yards long by 30 yards wide, and you need two cones, a goal with two outfield players and a goalkeeper.
The players should switch roles for the next attack.
This drill is taken from the manual Soccer Attack! by Michael Beale which contains 80 shooting and finishing drills.
