Players are encouraged to be patient in the build up and to use the goalkeeper as an extra player to pass to.
Players learn to work the ball from the back four to the front players. They practise being patient in the build-up and using the goalkeeper as an extra player.
Set up a rectangle relative to the age and ability of your players with a halfway line and a small goal on each corner.
Split players into two teams – in our example, it is 7v7 with each team having a goalkeeper, a back four and two midfielders/strikers.
The full-backs are outside the area and must stay there. They cannot be tackled. The goalkeeper is on the end line.
When the defenders are in possession in their defensive half, only the two attackers are allowed to pressure – the opposing defenders must stay in the other half. The ball starts with the goalkeeper, who must play it to a defender. The team then looks to build up an attack and score in one of the mini goals – protected by the opposing goalkeeper.
Players must show for the ball, offering angles and options for the player on the ball. Players are encouraged to move the ball to move the defence and open up gaps.
