Here is a tactic for your players to understand that getting goal-side may be one of the basic must-dos of the game but it can also be used as a tactic to stop the opposition breaching your defence. This is a great drill which shows individual defenders that they need to get goal-side of the attacking player and should not go chasing them in wide areas of the pitch. It is also an excellent way to show your defenders what you mean when you call "goal-side" to them. It helps young players to be put into situations rather than have you explaining to them what it is you want them to do. In this drill, the attacker has to come back inside to become a goalscoring threat. For the defender, getting goal-side is therefore more important than chasing the ball.
