Develop your pass masters in a session which promotes shifting the ball quickly.
This practice helps players develop their ability to pass the ball out from the back and across the halfway line.
Create a 50 x 70-yard field with a halfway line. Teams should be 7v7, with a neutral player at each end (playing as a goalkeeper and a centre forward). Both teams set up in a 4-1-2 (the 4-1 in the half with the ball and the 2 in the opposite half).
Both teams play at the same time in opposite directions. The ball starts with a neutral player who plays out to a teammate. Full-backs can dribble across the halfway line but their first touch must take them through a gate. Other players can pass across the halfway line but it must be played one-touch. Once the ball is in the opposite half, teammates can join (ensure defensive balance). The pass to opposite neutral must be one-touch.
Progressions: The #10 and #8 can press the ball; limit touches; at least one of the advancing players must touch the ball before playing to a neutral player.
• Receive facing forward whenever possible
• Look for furthest forward pass that is safe to play
• Be in a position to support the player in possession
• Ensure defensive balance
