Gives players a chance to improve their ability to track an attacking opponent and protect a goal.
Provides players with an opportunity to improve their ability to mark a player.
Mark out a rectangular pitch, with a smaller area inside of it. At one end of the pitch are two gates - at the other end, position a small goal in a corner. A defender and attacker start in the small area. A server is positioned at the end of the area where the two gates are situated.
The server plays a pass into the attacker, who can then exit the small area and attempt to pass the ball into the small goal. On receiving the ball, the attacker cannot play back to the server. If the defender wins possession, they then look to drive through one of the gates with the ball. Rotate the roles of the players regularly.
Progressions: Change the position of the small goal; Change the size or positioning of the small area; Allow the attacker to pass back to the server and receive the ball back anywhere in the area.
• As the defender, how can you position yourself between the player and the goal to best protect the goal?
• What is the best distance to be from the player you are marking?
