Exploiting space on the flanks can be an effective way to create scoring opportunities
This practice encourages players to link up before playing the ball out into a wide area of the pitch.
Use a square area relevant for your players. Split players into a number of groups - in this instance, there are three groups of four. Each group has a ball and they all start on different sides of the area.
Within their groups, players need to travel from one side of the area to the side directly opposite them. Once they have done so, they then return back to the side they travelled from and continue in this manner. While travelling between the different sides of the area, each player must touch the ball at least once.
Progression: Introduce a time limit to get from one side to the other.
The player on the ball needs to be aware of those from other groups and ensure there is a clear passing line to the team-mate they are passing to. Players receiving the ball need to make sure their team-mate in possession is able to pass to them. Decision making, in terms of who to pass to, and positioning of players will ensure the ball is transferred quickly and efficiently.
