This activity works on maintaining possession of the ball, but also on recognising the need to be progressive when your team has the ball.

Set up an area, as shown in the top picture and place four attackers on each side of one of the 10-yard squares, with a defender in the middle. Position a fifth attacker (a target player), on the end line of the adjoining square.
In the 4v1, attacking players attempt to complete six consecutive passes, without the defender intercepting it or kicking it away. If successful, they pass the ball forward to the target player. The defender then moves into the second square, while the three attackers nearest the target player reposition themselves on the perimeter of the second square to create another 4v1. The remaining attacker from the initial 4v1 doesn’t move, and becomes the new target player.
After another six consecutive passes the ball and players switch back to the original square to repeat. Attackers get a point each time they find the target man and the defender gets a point for each interception.
Extend the playing area and add a cone goal at either end. Place one defender in each half. Play 4v1 initially in one half.
Attackers must make at least four passes in that half before they can break over the halfway line and attack the goal in the half where the second defender is stationed.
To score, attackers must dribble the ball through the cone goal. Attackers turn and repeat in the opposite direction. Defenders gain a point for winning possession or forcing the ball out of play.
To progress, the first defender can join the second defender in the other half once the attackers complete four passes. Rotate roles so all players have a go at being the defenders.
Play a small-sided game in an area split into three zones. Play 6v6 and teams have two players in each zone. However, the team in possession can always have a one-player advantage in each zone to create a 3v2. And because there are no goalkeepers, teams can only score with a onetouch finish.
If the ball goes out of the area, restart with a passin from a player in that zone or goalkeeper. The team that scores most goals wins.
