Your team’s “shell” is the keeper, four defenders and one centre forward. The shell is something that enables the team to control the width and length of its play. In the middle of the shell, players can move around to disrupt opponents and create chances to score.
Rotating players in the central areas of the pitch.
Creating goalscoring opportunities.
What to think about
The team’s shell consists of the goalkeeper, four defenders and one main, central striker. This shell enables the team to always have control of the length of the team – that is the distance from the centre backs to the central striker.
The shell also enables the team to have control of the width of the pitch with the two wide defenders being encouraged to stay wide and move up and down the length of the pitch.
Now the midfielders and wide attackers can constantly rotate positions in order to unlock the opponent’s defence and create chances to score a goal – knowing the shell will protect them from counter attacks.

What you get your players to do
Use two teams, each has four defenders. Both sets of defenders have a ball and must pass the ball from one wide defender to the other. The wide defender now dribbles forward to pass to the opposite wide defender, who starts the build-up process with his fellow defenders.
Set moves:
1) Pass from the left defender (L) to the centre back (1) then to the next centre back (2), and to the right defender (R) who dribbles forward, as shown in the top picture.
2) Left defender passes to centre back 2, who sets back to centre back 1 to pass to the right defender, who dribbles the ball forward.
3) Left defender passes to centre back 1, who passes long to the right defender, who passes back to centre back 2, who passes into space for the right defender to run forward.
The shell defenders hone their passing and receiving skills and learn how to make progress up the pitch.
Development
Mark out an area with two target goals at one end. Use three teams, each with five players.
One team defends two target goals. One team attacks the goals. And the third team works as the shell (four defenders and one central striker), as shown in the middle picture.
The attacking team uses the shell to keep possession of the ball and create chances to score in either goal.
The defending team must try to win possession and pass out to the shell to gain a point. The defending team must collect three points to “score” one goal.
Rotate teams regularly and you will have a winner using the same time restrictions for each discipline.

Two teams play in the area and one plays as the shells outside. Both teams use the shell to score goals or points.
Game situation
Use half a pitch and mark out a channel on each wing. Add two target goals on the halfway line.
Use three teams. One team defends the big goal and attacks the target goals. One team attacks the big goal and defends the target goals.
The team attacking the big goal uses the third team, which is the shell (four defenders and one central striker) to create chances to score.
In this game, the shell players are limited to one touch. Rotate teams regularly and the team that scores most goals on aggregate, wins.
The shell is used to help the team attacking the big goal and helps stretch the team targeting the small goals.
