A coach struggles with coaching the individual AND the team. SCW explores how we might cater to both.
This is a complex challenge but I’m sure you’ll be able to navigate it.
We recommend the articles you’ll find from Ben Bartlett on our site.
In relation to question 1: The importance of being adaptable
And in relation to question 2: The moral dilemmas of selecting a team
But, generally, I think Ben’s thinking will help to guide you here. Seeing throughout his work how individual needs are nested within the larger team picture. How equal playing time may not be that equal as every minute differs contextually. And how fundamentally it all comes back to what kind of club you are and how this has been communicated to players (and parents!).
If we measure playing time in minutes and not quality of minutes, we might rely on putting our best players out in our hardest games and robbing our weaker players of challenges that help them grow and thus the better players get better and the gap widens. It is not easy!
